My Writing Process

I feel this post is going to extra short. My process isn’t much to explain…

Only by writing does writing get done

Not rocket science. Not even a new kind of parable, but that’s the nuts and bolts of it.

I’ve slowly consolidated all my writing tools to electronic format, but it’s not absolutely necessary for me to have my laptop or computer to write. In a pinch, any paper-ish substance and writing utensil is fine.

I don’t even have to have coffee, though it is my drink of choice.

There’s no specific kind of music I need, or silence that must be had. My preference is to have headphones; I’m my most productive when I’m wearing them, but again, not a necessity.

A list of the ways I set up to work might make this post interesting. I just don’t have any.

My process, the things I did to complete a book, was to simply write words. Then, I went over those words. I went over them again. Then again, chipping away until something I felt worthy of consumption was had. Even now, I wonder if maybe another round, or three, might have made it better.

We all get better with practice. No matter what it is, if we’re not doing it, we’re not getting better. We may even be getting worse.

So, I guess, my process is simply to practice.

Thoughtback

A small thing I use to keep what I should be doing in my face, is the ThoughtBack app. Three times a day I’m reminded that only be writing does writing get done. Sometimes I wonder if this makes any difference. Other times, I’m thankful for the reminder.
